A Maryland man has been arrested for knowingly passing HIV to several women he met through dating apps.
34-year-old Rudolph Smith was reportedly arrested and indicted by a Frederick County grand jury on four counts each of first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, and knowingly transferring HIV to another person following a 21-month investigation.
Police say they received a tip that Smith was meeting women off various dating sites and apps (Backpage and Bumble), having sex with them (we assume unprotected) knowing that he was HIV positive.
If a person knowingly transfers or attempts to transfer HIV to another person, it's considered a misdemeanor under the state’s general health law. Anyone convicted of violating the law faces a maximum sentence of three years in prison and a $2,500 fine.
Investigators learned Smith had been aware of his HIV diagnosis since 2014. He later confirmed to detectives he was aware of his diagnosis. The investigation began in July 2017 after police received a phone call from a woman who told them she tested positive for HIV after having sex with Smith. She said she believed he transferred the virus to her.
Over the next several months, detectives identified three more alleged victims.
Frederick County police are asking people who had sex with Smith during or after July 2017 to contact them via email (FPDcrimetip@frederickmdpolice.org), call 301-600-8477 (TIPS), or text to 240-674-8477 (TIPS).
