NEW GIG! Chadwick Boseman Is About To Serve Up African Samurai Realness In New Movie

Chadwick Boseman is about to make history after nabbing an epic role as an African Samurai. More inside...

Chadwick Boseman gave us African excellence in Black Panther. Now, he's ready to do it again in another project.

The Avengers star has landed a job to play Yasuke, the first and only African samurai in Japanese history.

“The legend of Yasuke is one of history’s best-kept secrets, the only person of non-Asian origin to become a Samurai,” Boseman told Deadline. “That’s not just an action movie, that’s a cultural event, an exchange, and I am excited to be part of it.”

The film's development kicked off in 2017 when Mike De Luca and Stephen L’Heureux said they were working on co-producing a movie based on the real-life historical character of Yasuke. Mr. Boseman and Logan Coles’ X●ception Content have also signed on to produce the film adaptation of the story.

Here's a little backstory about Yasuke:

Yasuke was a native of Portuguese Mozambique who was brought to Japan as a slave to Jesuit missionaries. The first black man to set foot on Japanese soil, Yasuke’s arrival aroused the interest of Nobunaga, a ruthless warlord seeking to unite the fractured country under his banner. A complex relationship developed between the two men as Yasuke earned Nobunaga’s friendship, respect — and ultimately, the honor, swords and title of samurai.

"Narcos" co-creator Doug Miro will adapt the biography into the script, according to Deadline. Looks like it's a race to get a movie about Yasuke out to the masses. MGM has set a rival project that has a script by Stuart C. Paul, and Whalerock Industries’ Lloyd Braun and Andrew Mittman producing. Interesting.

Congrats, Chadwick! We already KNOW he's going to slay this role.  Literally.

By the way, Chadwick's currently shooting Spike Lee's new movie Da 5 Bloods in Thailand.  It's about a group of veterans from the Vietnam War return to the jungle to find their lost innocence.
