BOTH OF THEM? Dominican Republic Officals Claim Vacationing Maryland Couple's Suspicious Death Was Caused By Respiratory Failure

A Maryland couple went to the Dominican Republic for some fun in the sun. What should have been a week of fun, turned into the final days of their lives.

63-year-old Edward Nathaniel Holmes and 49-year-old Cynthia Ann Day (from Prince George County) were found dead Thursday (May 30th) inside their hotel room at the Playa Nueva Romana resort in San Pedro de Macorís, on the southeast coast of the country, according to the Dominican Republic National Police.

Their suspicious death went viral.  Officials now say they BOTH suffered from respiratory failure. Hmm...

The couple jetted to the DR on May 25th and was scheduled to leave on May 30th. According to a statement from the Bahía Príncipe Hotel, the couple was found dead by hotel staff after missing their scheduled check out time. Staffers then contacted authorities. As of right now, it's unclear what led up to their deaths.

Holmes posted pictures of them having a blast during their vacation. "Boat ride of a lifetime!!!" he captioned.

Police said their cause of death was determined by autopsies performed at the Regional Institute of Forensic Sciences. They're still waiting for the toxicology and histopathology results.

According to reports, their bodies didn't show any signs of violence. Police said they found multiple medicine bottles in the couple's room, but no other drugs were found.

Their deaths were considered suspicious in part because Holmes complained of a pain on Thursday, but when a doctor arrived Holmes refused to see the doctor, police said.

The U.S. Department of State confirmed the couple's deaths in a statement to ABC News.

"We offer our sincerest condolences to the family on their loss," a State Department official said. "We are in close contact with local authorities regarding their investigation into the cause of death. We stand ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance. The U.S. Department of State and our embassies and consulates abroad have no greater responsibility than the protection of U.S. citizens overseas. Out of respect to the family during this difficult time, we have no further comment."

The hotel said in a statement that it is "deeply saddened by the incident."

SO weird how they both suddenly died from "respiratory failure." Their deaths comes after a Delaware woman claims she was brutally attacked by a man at her resort in Punta Cana a few moths ago.  A Connecticut man recently killed a Dominican resort worker who was working in Anguilla after he said the worker broke into the family's room and attempted to kill them.  There have been multiple other cases recently of Americans, particularly black Americans, suspiciously dying on Caribbean vacations.
