One of the greatest writers of our time has passed away.  More on the incomparable Toni Morrison inside.

Another one of our greats is now gone. Author, writer, Ivy League & Howard alum and professor, playwright, mother - and all around black queen - has died. Toni Morrison, the author of Beloved, was 88.

The cause of death is not currently known, but it seems she may have been facing some health issues recently when she was unable to attend the premiere of her documentary about her impactful life, Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am.

Toni Morrison's body of work is one of the most influential pieces of many people's healing and understanding of the place our black bodies have in this world. Her great works like Beloved, Sula, Tar Baby and The Bluest Eye - while fiction - gave many insight into the effects of racism, discrimination, segregation and desegregation, sexism, and feminism on America as a whole.

The Howard grad & Cornell alum (where she received her Masters) was the voice of the generation who is coming into their own understanding of their place in the world, and why they feel the sadness and joys of being black in America. It's no surprise she became the first black woman of any nationality to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in Literature in 1993, just before the final installment of her Beloved trilogy, Paradise, came out. Beloved - the first book of the "trilogy" - received the Pulitzer prize and became a cult classic film in 1998 starring Thandie Newton and Danny Glover, co-produced by Oprah WinfreyPresident Barack Obama also awarded Morrison the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.

There is plenty to remember and remark about the Princeton professor and Humanities chair, and checking folks about their white privilege is one of those things.

Never forget.

Thank you Toni Morrison for being the voice America, especially black America, always needed. R.I.P.
