BREAKING: Ex-Dallas Cop Amber Guyger Sentenced To 10-Years For The Murder Of Botham Jean, Racist Text Messages Released

Ex-Dallas police officer Amber Guyger has been sentenced to 10-years for murdering her neighbor Botham Jean. More inside…

The sentencing in Amber Guyger’s murder trial just came in.

A Texas jury just passed down the former Dallas police officer’s sentencing after she was found guilty of murder. The jury gave her a 10-year sentence for fatally shooting 26-year-old accountant Botham Jean inside his own apartment. Throughout the trail (that started last week), she defended shooting Botham by saying she mistakenly walked in the wrong apartment and opened fire on who she thought was a burglar. The jury clearly didn’t buy her story even after she shed white tears during her testimony.

10-years definitely doesn’t make up for her taking Botham’s life, but at least she was given a punishment and wasn’t let off the hook without any consequences. Judges hand down harsher sentences to people (specifically people of color) for drug convictions.

On Tuesday, the 31-year-old was found guilty of murdering Jean in 2018. She was initially facing a maximum penalty of life in prison and then it was changed to up to 20 years in prison.

CNN reports:

District Judge Tammy Kemp said she at first didn't understand how sudden passion applied to the case, but she "was informed yesterday afternoon that the state agreed to include sudden passion as part of the charge," she said, with prosecutors confirming.

According to Texas law, a victim must provoke sudden passion at the time of offense, not beforehand. Guyger has said she walked into the wrong apartment and opened fire after she mistook Jean for a burglar. Jean lived on the floor directly above Guyger.

The jury heard testimony from Amber and the officers who responded to the scene that night. They also heard testimony from neighbors who live in the apartment complex and an investigator who testified about how common it was for residents to wind up on the wrong floor of the South Side Flats where Guyger and Jean lived. The 9-1-1 call Amber made was played during the trial and the sexual messages were read that she sent to her married partner, Officer Martin Rivera, minutes before she killed Botham Jean.

After she was convicted, the state presented racist text messages Amber sent before the fatal shooting during the sentencing phase.

WFAA reports:

The first text message thread presented to the jury was from Jan. 15, 2018 during the Martin Luther King Jr. parade in Dallas.

"When does this end lol," read a text to Guyger.

"When MLK is dead… oh wait…” she responded.

“Just push them… or spray your pepper spray in that general area,” she said in a text while discussing the crowd at the parade.

In another text exchange, from Sept. 4, 2018, she admitted to being racist.

“Although she may be racist,” the dog’s owner messaged Guyger.

“It’s okay.. I’m the same,” Guyger responded.

“I hate everything and everyone but y’all," she later messaged in the same thread.
