Dallas Judge Tammy Kemp is responding to the backlash she has been receiving for hugging convicted murderer Amber Guyger after she was sentenced to 10-years behind bars for killing accountant Botham Jean in his own apartment. Folks have been going in on Judge Kemp on social media, legal experts have been speaking out and she has been receiving tons of mail and emails following the high-profile trial.
Judge Kemp is now speaking out for the first time since the controversial hug - that now has sparked an official complaint - and she’s defending her actions. She said as a Christian, she had to offer her compassion.
“She [Guyger] will forever be the murderer of Botham Jean. How she carries that forward depends on how we receive her. As a Christian, I’m commanded to offer her love and compassion, just as Brandt [Jean] did.”
Botham Jean’s brother Brandt Jean took the stand for his victim impact statement after the sentencing and offered up forgiveness. He also asked the judge if he could hug Amber. The Dallas County District said she couldn’t deny his request and let the two embrace.
“I said to Ms. Guyger, ‘Brandt has forgiven you, please forgive yourself’,” Kemp recounted.
She said the ex-cop asked her if she thought God would forgive her for what she did. After the judge assured her he would, Amber said she didn’t know where to start her road to salvation, so that’s when Judge Kemp went and got her Bible and gave her a scripture to read. Judge Kemp revealed Amber told her she would personally return her Bible back in 10 years after she completes her sentence.
