Mo'Nique is suing Netflix as her latest action in her ongoing feud with the huge streaming service. She's sticking to her guns alleging that the company committed pay discrimination, and now she's making it a legal matter. Deets inside.
After going on a media tour blasting Netflix for comitting what she says was unfair and unjust acts when it comes to payment offers, Mo'Nique's next stop is the courthouse!
She wants unspecified damages due to Netflix's "severe lack of diversity" and alleged discriminatory practices. TMZ reports:
She claims Netflix has a severe lack of diversity, which contributes to their discriminatory practices. Specifically, she claims one Netflix exec. -- the Chief Communications Officer -- used the n-word in a meeting with 60 people in 2018. Mo'Nique was not present for that meeting.
She also claims Netflix allowed Kevin Spacey to use the n-word while on the set of "House of Cards" without any consequence. In the suit, she alleges Spacey complained to his personal security guards, "I don't want [n-words] on my set anymore." She's not suing Spacey.
Mo'Nique also used a major pay gap on the Netflix hit, "The Crown," to illustrate alleged discrimination. She says the actress who plays Queen Elizabeth II was paid $14k per episode less than the actor who played Prince Philip -- and it only righted the wrong after there was a public outcry about it.
Back in January 2018, the comedienne called out Netflix for lowballing her on an offer to do a stand-up special for the streaming network. She learned another black woman comedian, Wanda Sykes, had also been lowballed. Apparently, in a world where Dave Chapelle and Amy Shumer were getting hand-over-fist money to do one special each (at the time, but it has now spurnned into multiple specials), she was not feeling their $500K offer for her own special when she's coming to the table with Oscar credentials.
The situation sparked plenty of ish talking, debates, and drama amongst the tv hosting world. Mo also started dragging Oprah Winfrey and Lee Daniels into this, especially when Lee said the reason Mo gets lowball offers is because she did this to herself and isn't pleasant to work with. Then, the Almost Christmas star found herself battling against Tyler Perry, Oprah and others who she claims are kissing up to the powers that be and defending them as to not get blackballed themselves.
While a lot of people agree that Mo'Nique was very likely lowballed, everyone isn't on the same page about why. Some say it's because she doesnt' turn out the same amount of audience numbers at her shows as the Amy Shumers and Kevin Harts and Dave Chappelles do. So, Netflix mitigated their risk by offering less without the highest numbers to base possible watchability on. Mo called B.S., saying she has an Oscar, several awards, and has many top movies under her belt, and she always sells out her shows (even if they are in smaller arenas).
Netflix didn't budge on their offer to her, so, here we are. Mo confirmed the news of the lawsuit, posting:
She may get the money she was looking for....but via lawsuit instead of in exchange for a Netflix special.
