Alicia Keys & Boyz II Men Open The 2020 Grammys With Kobe Bryant Tribute ‘In The House That He Built’

Hours before the 2020 Grammys were set to go down, NBA icon Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna Bryant tragically passed away. Host Alicia Keys had Boyz II Men join her for a tribute to open this year’s ceremony. Check it out inside…

As Grammy attendees were getting ready for the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, the world was rocked with news that NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna Bryant died (along with 7 others) after their helicopter crashed on their way to a basketball game.

The devastating news shifted the 2020 Grammys opening, which was held inside the Staples Center. Moments after Lizzo hit the stage, host Alicia Keys came out to pay tribute to the fallen superstar.

“Here we are together on Music’s Biggest Night,” Alicia said. “But to be honest with you, we’re all feeling crazy sad right now because earlier today, Los Angeles, America and the whole wide world lost a hero, and we’re literally standing in here heartbroken in the house that Kobe Bryant built.”

The impromptu tribute had everyone teary eyed as Alicia remembered his legacy.

“Right now Kobe and his daughter Gianna, and all of those that have been tragically lost today are in our spirits. They’re in our hearts. They’re in our prayers. They’re in this building,” she continued. “I would like to ask everybody to take a moment and just hold them inside of you… and share our strength and our support with their families. We never imagined in a million years we’d have to start the show like this. Never, never, never, never. So we wanted to do something that would describe, just a tiny bit, how we all feel right now.”

The songstress and singing trio performed an a capella version of Boyz II Men’s classic single “It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday.”
