When Diddy hit the stage to accept the coveted Salute to Industry Icons Award at Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy gala, he didn’t waste any time to address the “elephant in the room.”
There’s been controversy leading up to this year’s Grammy Awards after ousted CEO Deborah Dugan blasted the Recording Academy for their “rigged” voting process and protecting sexual predators.
During his 40-minute speech, the Bad Boys Records founder didn’t shy away from the controversy at all, putting the Recording Academy on front street for their lack of respect of Hip Hop and black music in general.
“In the great words of Erykah Badu, ‘We are artists and we are sensitive about our sh*t,” he said. “We are passionate. For most of us, this is all we got. This is our only hope,” Combs continued. “Truth be told, hip-hop has never been respected by the Grammys. Black music has never been respected by the Grammys to the point that it should be.”
It’s no secret black entertainers get pushed to the side when it comes to Grammy nominations. We all have noticed this over the years, so the Bad Boys honcho used this opportunity to let the Recording Academy know how he really feels and he’s demanding change. He prefaced his declaration with love, but he didn’t mince his words while passionately defending his love of black music.
“So right now with this current situation, it’s not a revelation. This thing been going on, and it’s not just going on in music, it’s going on in film, it’s going on in sports, it’s going around the word,” Diddy said. “And for years we’ve allowed institutions that have never had our best interest at heart to judge us. And that stops right now.” The star-studded stood to their feet with a rousing around of applause.
The music mogul – who’s a three-time Grammy winner - issued a strong message to the Recording Academy, putting them on the clock to “get your sh*t together.”
“I’m officially starting the clock. You’ve got 365 days to get this shit together. We need the artists to take back control, we need transparency, we need diversity. This is the room that has the power to make the changes that need to be made. They have to make the changes for us. They’re a non-profit organization that’s supposed to protect the welfare of the musical community. That’s what it says on the mission statement. That’s the truth. They work for us.”
Diddy said he wasn’t there to bash the Recording Academy, but he wants to make it better for the advancement of black culture.
“My goal used to be about making hit records. Now it’s about ensuring that the culture moves forward. My culture. Our culture. The black culture. And for me to be worthy of receiving an icon award, I have to use my experience to help to make a change. On that note, I’m finishing up: You all got 365 days”.
Since the Recording Academy snubbed several projects that didn’t win in top categories, Diddy decided to dedicate his award to several classic albums he felt should have taken home major awards, including Michael Jackson’s Off The Wall, Prince’s 1999, Beyonce’s LEMONADE, Missy Elliott’s Da Real World, Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle, Kanye West’s Graduation, and Nas’ Illmatic.

Beyonce and Jay-Z were also attendance after hitting up their annual Roc Nation Brunch. Clive Davis thanked them for being int the audience during the gala:
