High School Seniors will not get the chance to walk across the stage anytime soon, so celebrities are coming together to host the most fire commencement ceremony ever. Deets inside…
It sucks high school seniors will not get to experience walking across the stage to celebrate the next step in their lives due to COVID-19. However, Facebook and a handful celebrities are coming to together to host a virtual commencement ceremony for the history books.
America’s graduating seniors can celebrate the milestone with a live-streaming event next month that will include a commencement address by Oprah Winfrey and several others. Other celebrities who will drop in to address the 2020 Class will be rapper Lil Nas X, Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles, actress Jennifer Garner, and actress Awkwafina. Singer Miley Cyrus will perform her track “The Climb.” Facebook plans to announce more celebs in the future.
Principals, deans and administrators from various schools and universities will also speak and give shoutouts during the Facebook live stream while pictures of the 2020 graduating class (from schools across the nation) will be shown. Sweet.
The entire event will stream on Facebook with segments appearing on Instagram (which FB owns).
Facebook writes in a blog post:
On Monday, May 11, Instagram will kick off daily programming that spotlights graduates’ experiences, like portrait showcases and senior skip day. Instagram also will roll out new in-app creative tools and features including a graduation countdown sticker, a celebratory sticker pack, new AR effects, and a custom hashtag page for #Graduation2020. In addition, Facebook and Instagram Stories will launch a graduation theme for music stickers, comprising a list of grad-related songs for moments users share to their stories.
The social giant also is enabling grads to host their own digital ceremonies and parties via the Facebook App, with special features including a virtual graduation hub, custom filters, and video chats through its new Messenger Rooms feature.
That’s pretty solid considering the circumstances! Congrats to the Class of 2020! We're virtually turning up for the high school grads May 15th!
