As the Coronavirus pandemic continues, it’s shutting some things down and will possibly cause a surge in another area.
Turns out, lockdowns in some countries are disrupting the condom supply chain! The world’s largest condom producer – Malaysia based Karex Bhd, maker of the Durex brand – has reportedly warned of a global shortage of condoms as supply has fallen by almost 50%. Malaysia’s Karex Bhd makes one in every five condoms globally.
Last month, the company restarted its factories with a reduced workforce following a week-long closure to comply with a lockdown from the Malaysian government.
"It will take time to jumpstart factories and we will struggle to keep up with demand at half capacity,” the chief executive, Goh Miah Kiat said.
“We are going to see a global shortage of condoms everywhere, which is going to be scary. My concern is that for a lot of humanitarian programs … in Africa, the shortage will not just be two weeks or a month. That shortage can run into months.”
No word yet on how all the other condom brands are faring, but it's very likely a similar story.
So with a shortage of condoms, that could mean MORE babies, especially since people have way more time on their hands.
“Only time will tell if a baby boomlet will be a potential outcome of the COVID-19 response," June Gupta, Planned Parenthood's director of medical standards, told USA Today.
"These (social distancing) recommendations mean people are spending a lot of time together and may have more time than usual to have sex. This could result in more pregnancies if, hypothetically speaking, people are unable to access family planning resources like birth control, emergency contraception, condoms or abortion.”
Be careful folks, if you're not trying to pop out a broke best friend (kids, gotta love 'em!) by early 2021!
There are some medical professionals who say we shouldn't believe the hype, thuogh.
"On the whole, it’s unlikely that America will see a coronavirus baby boom – but we could see a baby blip," wrote Richard Evans, associate director in the graduate computational social science program at the University of Chicago, in an op-ed column in The Washington Post last month. "Given all the previous evidence on how different types of catastrophes affect our fertility, it seems likely that we can expect a small increase in births as a result of the coronavirus."
How small? Nationwide, he thinks there could be a 2% increase, meaning roughly 6,000 extra births per month this winter, depending on how long the shutdown endures. Not exactly a boom.
