Brandy Reveals Her Daughter Saved Her Life When She Was Contemplating Suicide Amid Depression Battle

Brandy opens up about her life like never before! The award-winning singer gets candid about her long battle with depression and how her daughter, Sy’Rai, saved her life. More inside…

If you grew up in the 90s, you likely were “sitting up in your room, back here thinking about” some little boy you had a crush on at that time.

R&B singer Brandy def provided the soundtrack to our lives growing up with her chart-topping hits. We and our homegirls and everybody else were singing that Grammy winning track “The Boy Is Mine” featuring Monica to the top of your lungs with conviction. Not only that, she gave us a bomb sitcom titled “Moesha” that shed light on issue young Black people were facing.

While it may have seemed Brandy was “sitting on the top of the world,” these last two decades have been one hell of a rollercoaster ride for her. She has been in this game since she was 15. Now, she’s a 41-year-old woman who has been through some things and have gained knowledge about life.

It seems Brandy started battling depression following her involvement in a fatal car crash that took the life of a 38-year-old woman in 2006. The singer was never criminally charged and settled with the woman's family out of court. The "Movin' On" singer also suffered major heartbreak from a failed relationship with producer Robert "Big Bert" Smith. The couple kept their relationship super lowkey until February 2002, when Brandy announced that she was expecting her first child. However, a year after the birth of their daughter, Sy'rai Iman Smith, the couple called it quits.

Those events took a toll on the Full Moon songstress, which resulted in her sinking into a super dark place.

“I remember laying in bed super depressed,” she told PEOPLE. “I [told] myself, ‘So, you’re just going to go out like this? That’s wack. You have a daughter. If you can’t do it for yourself, do it for her because this is not the way to leave a mark in her life.'” “If Sy’rai wasn’t here, I wouldn’t be either,” the singer continued. “The place that I was in, it just felt like I wasn’t going to make it through.”

Brandy said after she revealed she was about to become an unwed mother, it “changed people’s perspective” of her.

“But I had to focus on what was important, which was Sy’rai,” she said about her 18-year-old 2020 high school graduate.

With the release of her new album B7, Brandy said she had second thoughts about how deep she got on some of the tracks, but realized she was headed in the right direction where she could be proud of herself.

”I was thinking, 'Did I go too deep? Did I go too far in what I was singing about?' But I didn't dwell on those thoughts," she says. Staying on top of her mental health with therapy, meditation, journaling and her faith, Brandy says she's finally feeling back on track.

"I'm in a place now where I can be proud of moving in the right direction."

And we love to see it.

If you didn't know, SyRai seems to be following in her mother's footsteps. Take a listen to her vocals below:
