Fans have been asking for a Brandy vs. Monica VERZUZ Battle. And now – it’s happening!
R&B Queens Brandy and Monica will link up at Tyler Perry Studios for what we know will be an epic VERZUZ Battle filled with incredible vocals, nostalgia and sisterhood.
"Get ready for the queens!" the official VERZUZ IG account wrote in the caption of an image that features half faces of the two singers. The R&B songbirds will go head-to-head on Monday, August 31st 8pm EST via Instagram and Apple Music.
"#History," Brandy wrote on IG. "Thank you @monicadenise and @verzuztv for making this happen. Let’s celebrate!!!! #b7"
"This will be historical," Monica agreed. "It’s an honor @brandy."
In another post, Monica encouraged fans to drop their song requests for the battle:
"What songs would you all like to see us bring to @verzuztv !! Celebrating these catalogs is for the culture with love! From Young Women to Adult Women we’ve been with y’all! Name the songs you love," she wrote.
This particular battle has been talked about for months leading up to the announcement. The Brandy vs. Monica battle was requested by fans, but everyone wasn't on board at first.
Brandy said she would be open to a VERZUZ Battle with Monica while on the promo trail for her new album.
”Well, everybody is talking about a Verzuz with Monica and I and I’m definitely open to that. If she is ever open to that, I would love to do a Verzuz with her. It’d be so great for the culture,” the Full Moon singer told Beat Route Media.
However, Monica wasn't exactly with it. The "Why I Love You So Much" singer told V-103 Atlanta’s Frank Ski she wasn't interested in "battling" Brandy, but would be down for a “celebration” of music.
“The reality is that us [Monica and Brandy] being polar opposites makes it dope,” she said. “The only battle or Verzuz they want to see with me is me against Brandy and the reality is people have put us against each other for 20-something years.”
VERZUZ co-creators Swizz Beatz and Timbaland clearly pulled some strings and secured the deal. Woot!
We’re predicting they’ll wrap up the battle with their Grammy Award winning 1998 duet “The Boy Is Mine.” Or maybe start off with it. Not sure but everyone including Mekhi Phifer will be stressed.
The timing of the battle comes at a good time for the ladies…musically. A few weeks ago, Brandy released her first album in eight years, B7.
Monica teased the release of an album titled Chapter 38 last year, but it has not been released yet. Back in May, Grammy winning singer/songwriter/producer PJ Morton confirmed he’s currently working on Monica’s Chapter 38 and it’s expected to drop later this year. The album will be Monica’s first full-length project since 2015's Code Red.
Over the last few days, Monica has been feuding with Master P (or actually the other way around) over the release of rapper C-Murder from prison. P is pissed Monica called up Kim K to help get his brother out and all hell broke loose. Catch up on the tea HERE.
