The people need this. The first look at Coming 2 America is here and now we’re even more anxious to see the sequel. Peep the first look inside…
We’re going going, back back, to Zamunda 'Munda!
The first look at the Coming 2 America is here and it has only made waiting for the actual movie to drop even harder to wait for. The highly anticipated sequel to the classic 1988 film Coming to America is almost here and you’ll be able to watch it from the comfort of your own home.
Coming 2 America is set to debut on Amazon Prime on March 5th.
Several of the film’s original actors will be returning to reprise their roles, including Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, Shari Headley, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Garcelle Beauvais, Paul Bates, and Louie Anderson.
The star-studded cast also features new faces, including Hollywood vet Wesley Snipes, “Supermarket Sweep” host Leslie Jones, “Power” star/R&B crooner Rotimi, "The Last O.G." star Tracy Morgan, singer/actress Teyana Taylor, comedian Michael Blackson, "Crashing" actor Jermaine Fowler, If Beale Street Could Talk actress KiKi Layne, and comedienne Luenell. Oh yes, this will definitely be a black classic everyone will be required to see.
Rapper Rick Ross confirmed his 109-room Georgia palace will be featured in the flick and he will reportedly make a cameo.
”black-ish” creator Kenya Barris, Eddie Murphy, and Kevin Misher are producing, and Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow, "Empire") will direct, so it's in good hands.
In the sequel, Shari Headley (above) will be reclaiming her throne as Prince Akeem’s wife, Lisa McDowell. Akeem [Eddie’s character] is preparing to become King of Zamunda when he learns about his streetsavvy, Queens-bred son named Lavelle (played by Jermaine Fowler). Looking to crown the new prince, Akeem and of course, his sidekick, Semmi [played by Arsenion Hall], set out to hit the streets of New York again.
"This is the perfect time to return to Zamunda because it’s been a while since we’ve had a great comedy that everybody can enjoy," Eddie told PEOPLE. "Zamunda is a very funny place, and the world needs that right now."
Eddie is excited to mix the original cast with the newcomers – including his daughter Bella Murphy.
"What I’m most excited about the audience seeing is how amazing this movie is," he says. "We have incredible new cast members like Wesley Snipes, Tracy Morgan, Leslie Jones, Jermaine Fowler, KiKi Layne and my own daughter, Bella Murphy, among others, who are all so funny and really brought their A-game. It's just a great picture and I’m excited to have audiences see it."
“Of the countless characters I’ve portrayed, King Jaffe Joffer remains one of the most enjoyable and iconic characters I’ve had the pleasure of playing," James Earl Jones told PEOPLE. "With his regal and commanding presence as the ruler of Zamunda, I reveled at bringing his presence to life for Coming to America in 1988. And now, over 30 years later, I am honored to reprise my role once again in the sequel, Coming 2 America."
"I feel it’s the perfect time for everyone to return to Zamunda!" he adds. "This powerful cast, both reuniting the original and welcoming the newcomers, represent the essence of Black Royalty. Working with Eddie Murphy has been an indelible experience and his dedication and passion for this project is truly inspiring. It means the world to me to be a part of this beloved franchise.”
