A man with COVID-19 symptoms reportedly died on a United Airlines Flight recently. For those of you considering hopping on a flight, you may want to read this story before doing so….intro
If you’re thinking about hopping on flight, you may want to reconsider. Especially if your airline is not doing their due diligence.
It’s a strange time in the United States right now. It feels like half of the nation is utterly terrified of catching COVID-19 and are social distancing and staying inside. Meanwhile, others are partying like folks aren’t dying at record numbers due to the virus (*coughs* Atlanta *coughs*).
When the holidays rolled around, medical experts advised Americans to skip out on holiday travel. Everyone didn’t listen and it resulted in a death on a United Airlines flight last week.
Last week (December 14th), a man on a United Airlines plane from Orlando to LA (many coming back from a Disney World trip) became ill during the flight and ultimately died. According to his wife, he was experiencing COVID-19 symptoms!
In a series of tweets posted on Twitter by several other passengers, they said a man experienced a medical emergency on United 591 where several people stepped in to help save his life.
While people were performing life-saving tactics on the man, his wife admitted he felt short of breath, and had also lost his sense of taste and smell prior to boarding. The male passenger who became ill on the flight filled out a COVID-19 "Ready To Fly" checklist before hopping on the plane. He reportedly said he had not tested positive for the virus and that he did NOT have any symptoms. The woman and the deceased man were supposed to get tested for COVID-19 in LA. The plane was originally scheduled to fly from Orlando to Los Angeles.
It’s reported CPR was performed on the man for more than 45-minutes. Passengers on the flight told Daily Mail they could hear the man’s bones crack as chest compressions were carried out before he started turning blue.
Passenger Tony Adalpa helped perform CPR on the man after two others had already started performing life-saving tactics to save the man. After the ordeal, Tony shared his experience on social media. In the tweets, he said he hadn’t heard from United Airlines or the CDC days after the man’s death:
By now most of you know I was on the @united flight that has been in the news. I made the decision to attempt to save the passengers life and along with 2 others performed CPR for close to an hour until we landed. And continued to help the firefighters when they came onboard.

I spent the remainder of the flight covered in my own sweat and in that man's urine. I have since become symptomatic myself and am awaiting the results of my second test. I have not been contacted by the airline or by @CDCgov as of this time.

Looking back I would not change my actions, but I may have stepped up earlier. Knowing I had the knowledge, training and experience to help out, I could not have sat idly by and watched someone die.

”There was no mouth-to-mouth at all. We were doing chest compressions and they had him on the oxygen mask from the plane, then once we had a medical bag that is kept on board we used an ambu-bag which is a bag that you squeeze to give breaths, that's what we used for breathing,” Tony Aldapa told Daily Mail.
Peep video footage captured during the medical emergency below:
After the man became ill on the flight, the plane diverted to New Orleans where he was rushed to a local hospital. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. United Airlines were originally told the man suffered a heart attack on the flight, but that doesn't appear to be the sole reason he passed away. According to the Daily Mail, the wife allegedly admitted to EMTs in New Orleans that her husband DID in fact test positive for Coronavirus or at least showed Covid symptoms (there's conflicting stories), which means they lied on the check-in card for the flight if true.
Now, Tony Aldapa is concerned he has contracted the virus, saying he feels "like I got hit by a train."
"I had a cough, my whole body still hurt, I had a headache," he added.
Eventually, the CDC got involved and reached out to the passengers on the flight to inform them that the deceased passenger could have been infected with COVID-19:
"At the time of the diversion, we were informed he had suffered a cardiac arrest, so passengers were given the option to take a later flight or continue on with their travel plans,” a representative for United Airlines said.
”Now that the CDC has contacted us directly, we are sharing requested information with the agency so they can work with local health officials to conduct outreach to any customer the CDC believes may be at risk for possible exposure or infection.”
”The health and safety of our employees and customers is our highest priority, which is why we have various policies and procedures in place such as mask mandates and requiring customers to complete a ‘Ready-to-Fly’ checklist before the flight acknowledging they have not been diagnosed with COVID-19 in the last 14 days and do not have COVID-related symptoms,” the statement continued.
Another passenger also documented the man’s death on the flight:
& we finna continue this flight. On the SAME CONTAMINATED ass plane.

By the way, this woman is still alive and tweeting on her account.
United Airlines hasn’t specified if the CDC confirmed the man’s cause of death or confirmed if he was infected with the Coronavirus. Right now, the CDC is was "in the process of collecting information and proceeding according to our standard operating procedures to determine if further public health action is appropriate."
Just stay home! It’s not worth your life.
