President Biden Revives Harriet Tubman $20 Bill Plan After Trump Said It Would Be Delayed For Years

President Joe Biden is moving forward with the plan announced five years ago that would place Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill. The Trump administration said it was delayed due to “technical issues.” More inside…

President Joe Biden has been signing executive orders and making changes left and right since he was sworn in office less than a week ago.

You may remember there was talk about placing abolitionist Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill, replacing former president Andrew Jackson.

“I was here when we announced that, and it was very exciting and hasn’t moved forward yet,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki - who also served in the Obama administration - told reporters during a recent briefing. “The Treasury Department is taking steps to resume efforts to put Harriet Tubman on the front of the new $20 notes. It’s important that our notes, our money... reflect the history and diversity of our country and Harriet Tubman’s image gracing the new $20 note will certainly reflect that.”

Here's a peek at the proposed bill:

The Obama administration announced the plan in 2016, however, the Trump administration put it on pause. In 2019, the Trump administration said the change would be delayed until at least 2028 due to “technical issues.” White House Press Secretary Psaki said the White House is "exploring ways to speed up that effort."

If the change is made, Harriet Tubman would become the first Black person to be placed on U.S. paper currency. As you know, the famed abolitionist freed thousands of slaves via the Underground Railroad.

There’s significance behind the $20 bill and Harriet. In 1899, lawmakers agreed to set Harriet’s monthly military pension at $20/month. She helped the Union Army during the Civil War as a spy, nurse and laundry worker. A $20 payment at that time is equivalent to over $530.

Sweet! Are you excited about Harriet Tubman being placed on the $20 bill?
