‘Queen Sugar’ Returns In February, Season 6 Gets The Greenlight!

Our favorite NOLA family is coming back to our televisions soon. Not only that, a new season is on the horizon as well. New deets about “Queen Sugar” inside…

Get excited!

We don’t have to wait until the summer for a new season of OWN’s hit TV show “Queen Sugar!” Sadly, we didn’t get ANY new episodes in 2020. Never fret, they’ll be back in just a few weeks.

Season 5 of “Queen Sugar” is set to premiere Tuesday, February 16th. Before the new season hits our television screens, the network has given the series the greenlight for Season 6. WOOT!

“What a joy and an honor to continue the stories of Queen Sugar with our partners at OWN and Warner Bros.,” said EP Ava DuVernay. “On behalf of every producer, editor, costumer, grip, writer, cast member and all departments involved in making this series, we’re delighted to delve into a sixth season and to bring our beautiful audience more of the Bordelon family.”

Filming of Season 5 was put on hold due to the Coronavirus pandemic shutting everything down back in March 2020. The show was put on pause for a long seven months. The plot for Season 5 was revamped during their shutdown to reflect what’s going on in society right now.

Production started back up in October 2020.

“When Ava came to us with the idea to revamp the storyline for the new season after production was halted due to the pandemic, we knew it was the right decision to give our viewers Ava’s unique perspective on the very real issues impacting their daily lives and the effect the demand for racial equality has had on the Black community and our society as a whole,” Tina Perry, president, OWN, said in a statement.

The upcoming season will now address the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement

As the network states, “DuVernay re-conceived the character arcs and storylines, writing alongside returning showrunner Anthony Sparks and co-executive producer Norman Vance to tackle head-on the COVID-19 pandemic, the Black Lives Matter protest movement that swept the country, and the lead-up to elections to showcase the specific impact and ramifications these issues have on communities and people of color. Through it all, viewers will see the joy around the pain, and humanity’s ability to persevere and find light in the darkest of times."

The directorial lineup for season 5 includes Lauren Wolkstein (who is also now a producing director), Lisa France and Cierra Glaude. This season continues the initiative started by DuVernay in the first season of an all-female directing team. Thirty-two women have made their television directorial debut on the show, which also has inclusive hiring with female department heads from casting to post-production and music supervision.

Yep the Bourdelons are BIZZACK! As you know, “Queen Sugar” focuses on the trio of Bordelon siblings, played by Dawn-Lyen Gardner, Rutina Wesley and Kofi Siriboe (and their extended family) as they fight to save their family farm to preserve their father’s legacy. Season 4 left viewers wondering if Nova would be able to reconcile with her siblings after blasting all of their family business in her book. We shall see!
