Tamika Mallory Responds To Samaria Rice’s ‘Clout Chasing’ Claims, Says She Reached Out But Hasn’t Talked To Tamir Rice’s Mother

Activist Tamika Mallory has responded to claims made by Tamir Rice’s mother – Samaria Rice – that she’s a “clout chaser” who is profiting off of police killings of Black youth.

Samaria Rice – who’s 12-year-old son Tamir Rice was killed by a white police officer in 2014 - slammed Tamika after her spoken word segment about Black oppression and police brutality during Lil Baby’s politically charged Grammy Award performance. She aired out her frustrations with Tamika and civil rights attorneys Ben Crump and S. Lee Merritt, Esq., accusing them all of “clout chasing” in several Facebook posts.

Days later, Samaria and Lisa Simpson – the mother of 18-year-old Richard Rishner who was gunned down by LAPD in 2016 – issued a joint statement officially accusing Black Lives Matter activists for profiting off of police killings of Black children.

“Tamika D. Mallory, Shaun King, Benjamin Crump, Lee Merritt, Patrisse Cullors, Melina Abdullah and the Black Lives Matter Global Network need to step down, stand back, and stop monopolizing and capitalizing off our fight for justice and human rights,” the statement said. “We never hired them to be the representatives in the fight for justice for our dead loved ones murdered by the police.”

Last week, Samaria Rice appeared on “The Clay Cane Show” where she explained her beef with Tamika and the other social justice leaders. She admitted she could have handled the situation differently, but she said what she said.

“I did what I did, I said what I said. Could I have said it in a different way? Yes I could’ve,” said Samaria. “Yes I could have, but at the time, it got me angry. And, here we go once again. Maybe you should have the mothers on the stage with you Tamika as a family. It wouldn’t have looked too obvious. And, this ain’t got nothing to do with Lil Baby.”

“My direct message was for Tamika Mallory, the activist Shaun King‘s and the Black Lives Matter Patrisse Cullors of the world,” she explained. “It’s no working together because she has created a platform…what are we going to work and do? She already created a platform, and guess what? My platform was given to me from the death of my son. What type of work are we going to do because I’m not interested in no movie deals and book deals. That comes to me every day. I have to turn away every day. So, tell me, what we going to do?”

The outspoken activist said she has reached out to Samaria Rice, but she has not been successful.

“From my perspective I want to make sure that as a mother, that I speak directly to Ms. Rice and also just so that folks know, I have reached out through some other individuals. I don’t have any contact for Ms. Rice but I have reached out and let some other folks know that if she wants to speak with me I’m available to do so,” she said.

“I feel like we all have failed her. As a nation, I think that whenever a child or any person, but particularly a child, is killed, this nation should have erupted.”

As for using the names of police brutality victims, Tamika said she doesn’t use the names of deceased individuals killed by the state if she hasn’t worked with the families directly. And she encouraged people to look back at her past social media posts and speeches.

“Other than potentially calling the roll of all of the people that we can think about at any particular time that have been killed by the state, I have been very very careful — have always been careful — not to speak about cases or individuals that I have not worked directly with the families,” Mallory said.

After Tamir Rice’s mom public bashing, Tamika said she was hurt, but said she understands the pain and anger she feels.

Before addressing Samaria’s claim on her podcast, Tamika shared an IG post made by Tamika Palmer – the mother of 26-year-old Breonna Taylor who was killed by Louisville police in her apartment last year – that showed she’s standing in solidarity with Tamika Mallory:

”One of the consequences of white supremacy is the division it causes among Black people. Our communities are traumatized by it’s violence physically and emotionally,” Tamika Mallory captioned Tamika Palmer’s post.

“Tamika, I appreciate the LOVE we share. As I promised the first day we met, I will never leave your side! If you want to know my heart and what I’ve done, talk to people I actually know, have worked with and on behalf of.”

Hopefully, everyone can have a conversation to get everyone on the same page because this is only taking away from the social justice movement.
