Kid Cudi was the musical guest for "SNL" this weekend, and his looks - like his floral custom made dress - caused a LOT of conversation. Faux outrage or just toxic masculinity at play? Either way, Cudi is about to make a bag off of it. Deets inside.
Rapper/Actor Kid Cudi has always been a Kurt Cobain fan. He has the late Nirvana rocker tatted on him, and he's spoken about his admiration of the "Teen Spirit" singer previously.
Saturday night, which marked the same week as the 27th anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death, Cudi saluted him in the same ways Cobain himself used to have folks talking.
Rocking a custom, floral frock made by Virgil Abloh of "Off-White" for his "Sad People" performance and a Cobain-esque green cardigan with a tee serving as a salute to the late Chris Farley for "Tequila Shots", it all definitely raised some eyebrows.
As for why Kurt Cobain often wore dresses for performances or photoshoots, he was a proponent of breaking down gender stereotypes as a means to also break down the misogynistic, patriarchal beliefs that lead to te prevalance of rape and sexual assault of women:
Still, social media went into overdrive with the hotep-esque "black men in dresses is attempting to feminize the black man and eradicate all black men" rhetoric and folks just (rudely) laughing at his choices:
Yeah so much thought was put in this homage ...killed a bunch of brain cells to come up with this dedication

So many dudes have worn dresses in the past and even now. This is no news. You need to reevaluate your idea of masculinity

If Cudi gay and part of the LGBT community that's great and congrats, I have nothing against it. But it also a community of real black men that's been fighting for better representation in the media since the early beginning of tv. Cudi need pick a side.

Cudi seemed to have brushed it off and went into more detail on twitter about why he chose the dress:
Virgil designed the dress for me. I told him I wanted to show love to Kurt w a floral print sundress and this man made a masterpiece. Thank You @virgilabloh ur a fuckin genius!! Love you man we did it!!!
— The Chosen One (@KidCudi) April 11, 2021
And then he announced there's more where that came from. He's doing a fashion collab with Off-White, and the dress will be included:
Im doin a collection w Off White and the dress will be included!!

He def has an audience as plenty of people were super supportive:
It's been 27 years since Kurt Cobain died. Which as of last week is now longer than he was alive.
