The death of a poet hits differently. Rapper and actor DMX has passed away at age 50, and the mourning from all over the entertainment world and beyond is proof that his impact will last forever.
What many deemed the inevitable - all while remaining extremely hopeful - has happened. DMX, 50, died Friday after suffering a heart attack following a reported drug overdose at his home on April 2nd. He had openly battled substance abuse for decades, and last checked into rehab in 2019. He appeared to be living life to the fullest in a healthy way recently.
His family and representative confirmed the news in dual statements after X spent several days on life support in a White Plains, NY hospital. He also leaves behind a reported 15 (possibly 17) children.
His ex-wife Tashera Simmons and fiancé Desiree Lindstrom embraced outside during his final hours as they held vigil with tons of fans:

“Earl Simmons was a wonderful, caring father, and a sensitive, thoughtful man,” said Lyor Cohen, a former executive at Def Jam, in a statement. “Unfortunately, Dark Man X took over and ran amok, tormented and struggling to find the light. ... DMX gave me the inspiration to keep going at Def Jam when rap became soft and silly.”
The Associated Press reports:
“You can’t be a fan and not feel empathy for him in his journey,” hip-hop and electronic music producer Flying Lotus said in an interview while DMX was hospitalized this week. “You think of ‘Belly’ and all the great stuff that he was part of. But he was dealt such a weird hand, I think, with the drug stuff. And I just have empathy.”

The "Ruff Ryders’ Anthem”, "Where My Dogs At?!" and “Party Up (Up in Here)” rapper and star of cult classics Romeo Must Die and Belly was remembered by seemingly everyone. From his fellow Ruff Ryders to Hollywood stars like Ed Norton and Jet Li to the fans who soaked up every single word he ever said in that iconic raspy voice to strangers he made a point to make friends.
