Mother’s Day 2021 was celebrated with another round of R&B female star power following Erykah Badu vs. Jill Scott’s inaugural Mother’s Day VERZUZ Battle last year.
This year, R&B fans were treated to a battle between 90s R&B girl groups XSCAPE (Kandi Burruss, Tameka "Tiny" Cottle, LaTocha Scott, Tamera Coggins-Wynn, and Tamika Scott) and SWV (Cheryl "Coko" Gamble, Tamara "Taj" Johnson and Leanne "Lelee" Lyons), which went down in Atlanta. Both groups hit the stage together for a celebration of their greatest hits.
Backed by DJ AONE (who made sure to bring the energy) and DJ Spinderella (former of Salt-N-Pepa), the two powerhouse singing groups went up against one another, although it wasn’t a battle at all and more so a celebration of #BlackGirlMagic…R&B style.
While the ladies certainly put on a show as they performed some of their throwback hits, fans noticed something was off with SWV singer Coko. After the VERZUZ battle wrapped up, she explained she witnessed a woman being shot outside of her hotel room just moments before the battle. The traumatic experience caused her to have a panic attack, but her son was there to help calm her down and she was able to hit the stage with her bandmates. She almost skipped out on the battle.
“Last night as I’m preparing for Verzuz, a lady was shot outside my hotel window,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “To see & hear the four shots, see her laying on the ground and all the blood was unbelievable!!”
She continued, “Thennnn...I get to the venue and had a really bad anxiety attack! Literally crying & screaming. Yeah y’all saw me looking uncomfortable & irritated during the first half but, if it wasn’t for my son @jayyemichael @ynottamiya & @mrljb I probably wouldn’t have been out there at all. Thank you for calming me down & understanding my mental. I love y’all to the fullest!! I always say most won’t care to understand but when you get those that do cherish them!!”
Lordt! Just goes to show people should start practicing the art of not judging people. You never know what someone is going through and dealing with.

Wendy Williams’ ex-husband Kevin Hunter (aka Kelvin Hunter) was all in the mix behind-the-scenes before the VERZUZ Battle began.
“I’m sooo grateful to have the opportunity to share this MOMENT with these ICONIC QUEENS @officialxscape and be here for this HISTORICAL event!!,” Wendy’s ex wrote. “HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!!!! @officialswv #versuz #trilla #versuzbattle @therealtamikascott @majorgirl @kandi @iamlatocha”
It seems Kevin and XSCAPE’s Tamika Scott have a business relationship. In October 2020, he told Authority magazine that his publishing company (Head Hunter Publishing) will be releasing Tamika Scott’s cookbook, “Cooking With Tamika Scott.”
