Kimberly Potter - the former Minnesota police officer who said she confused her handgun for her Taser - was found guilty of manslaughter for fatally shooting 20-year-old Daunte Wright during a traffic stop back in April.
Daunte's family and supporters are happy for a conviction, but some feel manslaughter is too less of a charge since she shot and killed the 20-year-old in cold blood. More inside…
After deliberating for 27 hours over four days, a jury found former suburban Minneapolis police officer Kimberly Potter, 49, GUILTY of manslaughter in the killing of Daunte Wright.
The young biracial man - who had just become a father - was only 20 at the time of his death earlier this year (April 11th).
Former Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter - who said she confused her handgun for a Taser during a traffic stop - was found guilty of first degree manslaughter, "meaning she improperly used such force and violence that death of or great bodily harm to any person was reasonably foreseeable.”
The jury also found Kim - a 26-year-old police officer veteran - guilty on a second-degree manslaughter charge, which only required a finding of “culpable negligence” that created “unreasonable risk, and consciously takes chances of causing death or great bodily harm to another.”
The jury consisted of one Black person, two Asian American people and nine white people.
When the verdict was read, Kim Potter didn’t show any emotion:

Hennepin County District Judge Regina Chu ordered Kim into custody immediately and she was ordered held without bail pending sentencing on February 18th. She had been free after posting a $100,000 bail back in April.
As you can see above, after the verdict was read, one of Kim’s lawyers laid his head down on hands at the defense table as a sign of defeat. Defense attorneys Paul Engh and Earl Gray argued that Kim should be allowed to stay free on bail until sentencing because she’s a “law abiding person who made a mistake and will not commit any crimes while free.” Hmph.
Doesn’t matter. Judge Chu said she can’t treat this case any differently than she would any other case. So, Kim Potter will be spending Christmas in JAIL.
According to a pool report, Daunte’s parents, Arbuey Wright and Katie Bryant, took "deep breaths and loud sighs" and held hands as the first count was read. Daunte’s mom Katie spoke to the media after the guilty verdicts:
"Emotions. Every single emotion."

Daunte’s mom also thanked everyone who has shown support since her son was murdered:

Right after Daunte was gunned down in April, Daunte’s parents spoke out to share with the world that they weren’t accepting their son was “mistakenly” murdered. It was reported officers initially pulled Daunte over due to air fresheners hanging on his rear view mirror.
By the way, Daunte’s murder happened less than 10 miles away from where former police officer Derek Chauvin’s murder trial. The former Minneapolis police officer was sentenced to 22.5 years for the murder of George Floyd.
Outside of the courthouse, Daunte supporters - including his brother - erupted in cheers after the guilty verdicts were read:

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison also reacted to Kim’s conviction:
"At this moment, I ask us all to reflect upon the life of Daunte Wright, and who he could've been had he had a chance to grow up," Minnesota AG Keith Ellison says following Kim Potter's conviction.

”At this moment, I ask us all to reflect upon the life of Daunte Wright, and who he could've been had he had a chance to grow up,” he said.
Attorney Ben Crump was happy to see the justice system proved some sense of accountability:
Now, she faces a maximum of 15 years behind bars. Yep, that’s it. A maximum of 15 years for killing someone. Accident or not, the fact remains a person lost their lives due to her negligence.
Justice would mean that police never murdered Daunte Wright. Justice would mean his son would have a father still with him.
Today there was some measure of accountability with the criminal conviction of Kim Potter. A step towards justice. We must continue to march forward. pic.twitter.com/l4fZGyUN1V

While I am happy Former Police Officer Kim Potter has been convicted of manslaughter in the death of Daunte Wright, she will probably only serve 10 years in prison.

Does anyone who ever shoots and kills a cop get found guilty only of manslaughter?

Kim Potter has been found guilty on both charges for the murder of Daunte Wright. I need us to remember that this is not justice. Justice would be Daunte Wright being alive to spend the holidays with his family. Justice is abolishing all forms of policing. #KimPotterTrial

Another bittersweet victory. We still see way too many “accidents” — to say nothing of blatant violations of policy — in too many departments. I pray that the message of this verdict is heeded where it needs to be. https://t.co/HrRznCtUPO

While it is a complicated case, some folks believe she should serve more time in prison for taking someone’s life.
