Now that the world is looking for answers in the death of 23-year-old Lauren Smith-Fields, Bridgeport police has finally opened an investigation into her death after a medical examiner concluded she died from an accidental overdose. More inside…
The Bridgeport, Connecticut police is finally looking into the death of 23-year-old college student Lauren Smith-Fields after a medical examiner ruled she died of an accidental overdose. She was found dead inside her apartment on December 12th after a date with a 37-year-old white man. The man has not been charged, so we are not naming him.
The family of Lauren Smith-Fields has been ringing the alarm about the mistreatment and neglectful invesitgation into Lauren's death by the Bridgeport police department. Her loved ones filed a lawsuit against the city and demanded an independent investigation be conducted to find out what really happened to her. The police department surely doesn't know and don't seem pressed to find out.
According to CNN, the department's narcotics and vice division has finally opened an investigation into her death and they will be assisted by the US Drug Enforcement Administration.
The department has been dragging their feet with investigating her death, which is why her family has been vocal about how neglectful they have been. A medical examiner just ruled Lauren’s death was accidental and was caused by "acute intoxication due to the combined effects of fentanyl, promethazine, hydroxyzine and alcohol."
“I’ve never seen a medical examiner conclude a mixer of drugs as an accident without knowing who provided the drugs, or how it was ingested,” tweeted Darnell Crosland, the attorney representing Lauren’s family. “Lauren didn’t use drugs,” he added.
So, how did these drugs get into Lauren’s system? The police didn’t even investigate enough to find out, even though her attorney confirms many of the drugs listed are often used as date rape drugs. They just automatically assumed she ingested the drugs on her own and kept it moving.
Had there been doubt that Lauren was drugged, a criminal investigation should have been launched immediately.
Yesterday the 24th of December we celebrated Lauren’s 24th birthday and we are in pain this morning. @ActingChief Rebeca Garcia please stop lying to the public and show some compassion and respect to this family. You have yet to sit with us. You are truly an actor. https://t.co/ShtpYfIb1e

The police dropped the ball horribly investigating Lauren’s death. Now, they’re focusing their attention on "the factors that led to her untimely death," acting police Chief Rebeca Garcia said in a statement.
The Norwalk Community College student met a white man on Bumble and invited him over to her place. According to the police report, Lauren and the man were hanging out drinking the night before she died.
The man told police Lauren became ill and threw up in the bathroom before she came back and they continued to drink tequila and mixed drinks. He claims they drank, played games and ate before she received a text, went outside to get something from her brother and returned. He said she went into the bathroom for 10-15 minutes.
Upon returning from the bathroom, he claims they continued to watch a movie and finished the bottle of tequila before she fell asleep on the couch. He said he carried her to the bedroom and they went to bed. Around 3am he said he woke up to use the restroom and Lauren was snoring. When 6:30am rolled around, he said he woke up again and found her lying on her right side with blood coming out of her right nostril, and she was not breathing. He then called 911.
Sadly, it took days for Lauren’s family to be notified about her death as the landlord didn’t have family contact information. It wasn’t until her mother, Shantell Fields, went to Lauren’s apartment that she found out her daughter had passed away.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Lauren’s brother detailed how neglectful the investigators were when it came to collecting evidence from the scene. There was a large blood stain in the middle of her bed, as well as a used condom, lubricant and an unidentified pill.
Lauren’s family wants police to investigate her death with the same energy police investigated the death of Gabby Petito - the white woman who disappeared after a road trip with her boyfriend, who was eventually found dead. The family is frustrated with the mishandling of the investigation, and rightfully so.
“The M.E. findings doesn’t cure any of Bridgeport Police Department lack of process, in fact it makes it worse,” Mr. Crosland said in a statement Tuesday. “As a result of a botched investigation this morning we are left with more questions than answers.”

Thankfully, it seems the ball is now rolling in the right direction for the family to receive justice. Let's hope her death is investigated properly and if anyone had any part in her death, may they pay for it.
