Breaking news about the future of women’s rights broke right in the middle of the Met Gala festivities.
On Monday, a leaked document revealed the majority of the Supreme Court privately voted to strike down the landmark Roe v. Wade abortion rights ruling, leaving the legalization of abortion up to individual states to decide and in what circumstances. The 1973 landmark ruling ensured a woman had a choice in terminating a pregnancy in the first trimester.
Politico obtained the draft opinion, marking an unprecedented moment in the court’s modern history. The court confirmed the authenticity of the leaked draft and Chief Justice John Roberts said he had ordered an investigation into what he called an "egregious breach of trust."
“Until now, a leak of this kind would have been unthinkable,” said Peter G. Verniero, a former justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court. “The protocol of our highest court has been seriously ruptured. The leaking itself reflects another sad step toward casting the court as a political body, which, whatever your preferred jurisprudence, is most unhealthy for the rule of law.”
If Roe v. Wade is overturned, there will no longer be a nationwide constitutional right to legally have an abortion and it’s predicted at least 26 states are “certain or likely” to ban abortion. Women living in states where abortions are banned will have to travel to a state to have the procedure done IF they can afford to do so. And if laws in their home state are not passed that penalize women who do this.
It’s important to note, an actual opinion isn’t due on any case at this time. This could be a draft being formulated for a “what if” situation, and being worked on in advance with law clerks in his office.
It’s also important to note, if you are a person who is vehemently against the striking down of Roe v. Wade (which secures women’s right to choose and women’s right to privacy - not just including abortion but for ALL medical and some non medical situations), but believe Supreme Court appointments are insignificant, here is the proof to prove you wrong. Throughout history, The US Supreme Court can and has struck down entire federal laws - with the stroke of a pen - affecting the lives of specific groups of Americans. From slavery to Jim Crow to voting rights. It is why those who understand politics know that the Supreme Court is arguably the most powerful branch of government.
President Joe Biden blasted the draft opinion and warned that same-sex marriage and birth control are at risk if the court follows through.

”Women, when they decide something is not right for them, they'll take it into their own hands," she began. "Well, we got tired over tripping over women in bathrooms — public bathrooms — who were giving themselves abortions because there was nowhere safe, nowhere clean, nowhere to go. This law came about because people wanted people to have somewhere safe and somewhere clean."
She declared, “This is not a religious issue, this is a human issue."
