Chaka Khan Throws Epic Shade At Mariah, Drags Mary J. Blige's Vocals & Declines To Comment On Beyonce In Reaction To Rolling Stone’s ‘200 Best Singers Of All Time’

Legendary songstress Chaka Khan isn’t one to bite her tongue and she definitely didn’t hold back when asked about Rolling Stone’s “200 Best Singers Of All Time” list. Find out what she had to say about fellow singers Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Beyonce, Adele and more inside…

"Listen up, honey, because I'm about to tell you something good," exclaimed the legendary Chaka Khan, who is "every woman" and not afraid to show it.

Chaka Khan, the legendary singer who's voice transcends genre and time, held nothing back in her recent interview on The Originals podcast with Los Angeles Magazine. The 69-year-old singer was reacting to Rolling Stone's "200 Best Singers of All Time" list that came out in January 2023, and boy, did she have some thoughts to share.

During the podcast, host Andrew Goldman congratulated the "Tell Me Something Good" singer on her ranking at No. 29, just two spots ahead of Luther Vandross and one behind Mahalia Jackson. But, Chaka revealed she had no idea that the list even existed. Despite this, she didn't shy away from sharing her unfiltered opinions on fellow singers Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, and more.

“I didn’t even know what the hell you were talking about, so obviously this don’t mean a great deal to me,” she remarked. “These people don’t quantify or validate me in any way.”

Despite trying to come across as nonchalant, Chaka couldn't help but speak her mind about the ranking of other singers on the list. With a touch of sarcasm, the Queen of Funk commented on Mariah Carey's placement at No. 5, saying "That must be payola or some sh*t like that."

Oop.

And that's not all - when she found out she was placed behind Mary J. Blige, Chaka didn't hold back, calling the editors "blind as a motherfu**ing bat" and suggesting they were "the children of Helen Keller." MJB came in at No. 25 on the list.

But it's not just the list that has fueled tension between Chaka and MJB in the past. The Chicago native once accused the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul of "fu**ing up" the Rufus & Chaka Khan song "Sweet Thing" with her flat vocals.

“I told her her vocals were flat,” Chaka said of Mary’s version of the R&B jam.

According to Chaka, MJB apparently recorded the song at 8 a.m. - a fact that didn't sit well with the funk legend. Despite this, Chaka emphasized that their relationship is built on transparency and the ability to speak freely with one another.

”She and I have that kind of relationship we can talk ... you know, I love her, She loves me," she told the Goldman. "We don't have a problem."

Despite this, the two have since collaborated and even performed together at MJB’s Strength of a Woman Festival in 2022.

The “Ain’t Nobody” singer wasn't too pleased when she found out that Adele was ranked #22 on the list (ahead of her), and it caused her to have a "momentary existential crisis," according to podcast host Andrew Goldman.

”Okay, I quit,” Chaka said in response to Adele’s placement on the list.

The “I’m Every Woman” singer had a few words to say about the placement of Beyoncé on the singer’s list. While she didn't have much to say, the Queen of Funk did acknowledge the pop icon's undeniable talent. "I don’t have anything to say about her. She’s a great singer. She really has opportunity to be a great singer. She has what it takes. She got the chops. She does." Khan revealed in the interview.

While Chaka Khan had some strong words about the rankings, she had nothing but praise for Aretha Franklin, who secured the top spot, and Whitney Houston, who placed at No. 2.
