When Hollywood titans Denzel Washington and Viola Davis team up, the project turns to gold. Hell, PLATINUM.
The YBF actors will be collaborating on their their third August Wilson endeavor after slaying the stage on Broadway in the 2016 FENCES reviival and killing it at the box office for the 2016 film version.
Viola's dramatic role in the film earned her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2017. Denzel, who directed the film, earned two Oscar nominations for the film. Also, they both won Tony Awards for their Broadway work. By the way, FENCES grossed over $64M at the global box office.
So, as you can see magic happens when they collaborate.
Now, the dynamic duo is working on a Netflix feature adaptation of August Wilson's award-winning play, "Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom."
Mr. Washington will do what he does behind-the-scenes as a producer of the film. Viola Davis will reportedly star in the film adaptation and she will be joined by a stellar cast, including Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman, "How To Get Away With Murder" star Glynn Turman, "Fear of the Walking Dead" actor Colman Domingo and "True Detective" actor Michael Potts. Woot! We're feeling this casting already.
Deadline reports:
Multiple Tony and DGA award winning director George C. Wolfe will helm Ma Rainey with Todd Black and Dany Wolf producing alongside Washington. Ruben Santiago-Hudson is adapt Wilson’s play for Netflix. Constanza Romero will serve as EP. Oscar winning Ann Roth is set as the costume designer with Branford Marsalis composing.
Ma Rainey follows the “Queen of the Blues,” as she makes a record in a studio in Chicago, 1927, tensions boil between her, her white agent and producer, and bandmates.
Production is scheduled to start next month in Pittsburgh.
It's a passion project of Denzel's which has been in the works for a while. It was originally set to go at HBO. Now, it's at Netflix.

Major congrats to Denzel Washington as he is the recipient of the 47th AFI Life Achievement Award! And it's history making.
The Oscar/Golden Globe/Tony winner is the third African American to ever receive the honor. Hollywood legends Morgan Freeman was honored with the achievement award in 2011 and Sidney Poitier was recognized in 1992.

Fellow actors like Chadwick Boseman, Issa Rae, Michael B. Jordan, Mahershala Ali, and Jamie Foxx paid tribute to Denzel in a pre-taped ceremony a few weeks ago. Grammy winning singer Jennifer Hudson performed Same Cook's "A Change Is Gonna Come" and Beyonce popped up to present the Schaffner Medal to her friend/longtime collaborator Melina Matsoukas.
