Bryce Gowdy – a 17-year-old Florida teen – had a promising future. But it suddenly ended before he could even enjoy it
Byrce was a standout wide receiver and defensive back for the Deerfield Beach High School Bucks who had committed to playing for Georgia Tech on a full scholarship. However, he was killed by an oncoming freight train around 4AM Monday (December 30th) in his hometown of Deerfield Beach, according to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. He was taken to Broward Health North Hospital where he died.
It’s unclear what exactly happened as sheriff’s detectives are currently investigating his death. The cause and manner of his death will be determined by Broward County’s medical examiner’s office.
Bryce (above with his mother) signed with the Yellow Jackets earlier this month and he was set to enroll at GA Tech next week.
Sadly, he had his bags packed and ready to go to Atlanta to join the football team and complete his freshman year. Now, his family is painfully mourning the loss of their loved one.
“He said he was gonna be famous,” his uncle Thomas Gowdy told The Sun Sentinel. “He wanted to be famous."
Bryce’s uncle said the high school football stand out was a little nervous about leaving his family, especially his two little brothers.
“He was a little stressed having the weight of the world on his shoulders by going [to a Division I school], and having to leave his two younger brothers and his family in an unstable environment," Thomas Gowdy said. The family had financial struggles, Thomas Gowdy said, and it was rough for Bryce growing up.
“As much as he’s dealt with, to get a full ride — that’s unbelievable for where he’s from,” his uncle said.
Bryce's final tweet expressed how excited he was to attend Georgia Tech, writing, “Family matters, can’t wait to get to the ATL soon!” along with a picture of his family:

Georgia Tech coach Geoff Collins mourned Bryce's death in a heartfelt tweet, writing, "We are heartbroken. Bryce will always be a part of our Georgia Tech Football Family. We will be praying for him and all those who love him."

“Our entire Georgia Tech football family is devastated by the news of Bryce's passing," Coach Collins said in a statement. "Bryce was an outstanding young man with a very bright future. He was a great friend to many, including many of our current and incoming team members. On behalf of our coaches, players, staff and families, we offer our deepest condolences to Bryce's mother, Shibbon, and his brothers, Brisai and Brayden, as well as the rest of his family members, his teammates and coaches at Deerfield Beach High School, and his many friends. Bryce and his family will always be a part of the Georgia Tech football family."
Quarterback Jeff Sims - who also signed with Georgia Tech earlier this month - and Gowdy's Deerfield Beach high school team took to Twitter to mourn him as well:

The Sun Sentinel broke down his accomplishments:
He [Bryce] was a four-year varsity starter and a South Florida Sun Sentinel Super 11 pick before his senior season. He was ranked the No. 6 senior prospect in Broward County before the season began, and he was rated a four-star prospect.
Gowdy and the Bucks reached the state semifinals this season. Before the state semifinal game against Miami Columbus, Gowdy had 12 catches for 97 yards and three scores on offense and 15 tackles and an interception on defense.
Bryce Gowdy had graduated high school already, so he could be an early enrollee at Georgia Tech. Football players do this in part to be on campus for spring football practices and get more time to acclimate to college and their new team before the football season begins in the fall.
