Yup, you read that right. Long title short, Meghan and Harry are sick of y'alls (mainly the British press') sh--. And they just taught us how to really set boundaries in 2020. Deets on the couple's huge announcement inside.
Fresh off their Holiday vacation in Canada - that reportedly went swimmingly - The Sussexes' first stop upon returning to London this week was to stop by Canada House to thank them for making their stay so amazing.
The Duchess looked gorgeous in a chocolate satin midi skirt, peanut butter turtle neck and matching velour shoes.
They looked more relaxed and happy than they have in long time, which should have been a hint that they had something up their sleeve.
Those vacation smiles are about to become permanent ones, because Harry & Meghan just announced they're leaving their "Senior" Royal Duties and moving to North America! And it seems to be for the best.
The couple, who have been married for 2 and a half years, announced they are removing themselves from their royal duties to strike more of a balance between raising their 8-month-old son Archie and helping out Harry's grandmother, The Queen. They made it clear they will be financially independent (as the Brits subsidize the Royal Family) and will still be there for their families.
They stand to make millions on their own - books, businesses, speaking engagements, and more. And this is in addition to all of their charity work they will very likely continue.
This is quite the move, as we can't recall the last time (in modern times) that such prominent Royals voluntarily ditched their crowns for the private life.
But, it's not all that surprising. Harry & Meghan have received almost impossible amounts of scrutiny and backlash from the British press, family members and others. While most of us stan, not everybody knows how to sit there and eat their food and not be a hater.
Ever since their Royal Engagement, Harry's been letting the press HAVE IT when it comes to his wife and the racial attacks and threats. They didn't let up much even two years into their marriage. The Royal Family itself (namely The Queen) even seemed to be shading the couple just before Christmas. Now, we hear she is "disappointed" by their decision to leave their duties.
Harry has also been known to be open about his desire to leave the Royal Family if the opportunity presented itself so that he could be productive in other ways. He's has always been clear that he still takes issue with how the media, paprazzi and this Royal life caused his mother, Princess Diana, to have a hard life, and even more difficult death. He appears determined to not let the same thing happen to his own wife and child. And we love to see it.
The couple's website, Sussexroyal.com, goes into more depth about how their new, updated approach to working with the media will "enhance access" and "share information more freely with members of the public."
As explained on their website, the couple will be ditching the traditional Royal Rota system and they're doing things THEIR way. To sum it up:
The website explains that the system was established four decades ago to give certain U.K. print and broadcast media -- such as the Daily Mail, the Daily Mirror and the Sun -- exclusive access to royal content through engagements and photos.
"The current system predates the dramatic transformation of news reporting in the digital age," the royals' website explains.
In an effort to "reflect both their forthcoming change as members of the Royal Family with financial independence," Meghan and Harry will be revising this system to interact more freely with the public and ensure accurate reporting. This includes engaging with grassroots media organizations, providing access to "credible media outlets focused on objective news reporting" and taking on a bigger role in their social media accounts, which is no longer required to be filtered by the Royal Rota system.
"The current structure makes it challenging for The Duke and Duchess of Sussex to personally share moments in their lives directly with members of the public," they explained.
As moreso private citizens now, Prince Harry basically pulled a checkmate on the British press when it comes to access to he and Meghan's personal lives.
As for what the Queen has to say - she hinted in a statement that it's not necessarily a done deal.
It seems her grandson said what he said, though.
Congrats & good luck to Meghan and Harry on their brave new journey!
