The President of Jackson State University and a female employee were busted doing illegal extracurricular activities that landed them both in jail. President William Bynum Jr. and Shonda McCarthy – director of JSU's art galleries – were among 17 people who were arrested during a two-day prostitution sting at a Mississippi hotel last weekend. Both Bynum and McCarthy live in Jackson, Mississippi.
By Monday morning (Feb. 10th), President Bynum - a married father of six - resigned from his role. His resignation took effect immediately. Bynum had been president of Jackson State since 2017 after serving four years as president of Mississippi Valley State University.

57-year-old Bynum was reportedly charged with procuring services of a prostitute, false statement of identity and simple possession of marijuana after he was arrested late Saturday/early Sunday. 46-year-old McCarthy was charged with procuring services of a prostitute and possession of marijuana while operating a motor vehicle. Police believe both Bynum and McCarthy arrived at the hotel together, according to police spokesman Mark Jones. He declined to elaborate on any possible relationship between the pair.
So, how did they get caught?
Apparently, police made contact with the alleged offenders online through the “dark web.” The alleged suspects where responding to an online ad for prostitution services. When they got to the Fairfield Inn in the Jackson suburb of Clinton, they were met by an undercover police officer.
Clinton Police Chief Ford Hayman was asked if Bynum tried to convince police he was someone else and he responded:
“Without getting into particulars, yes, he was charged with that — providing a false identity.”
Bynum was released on a $3,000 bond early Sunday morning (Feb 9th) and he is due to appear in Clinton Municipal Court for his arraignment on March 11th.
Hours after Bynum’s resignation, the governing board for Mississippi’s eight public universities met for a "special emergency meeting" and named Jackson State administrator, Thomas Hudson, as interim president. The board said it "will discuss the future leadership of Jackson State at its regular board meeting next week."
When Bynum landed the role in 2017, he was met with protests from some alumini and students since he was not among the three initial finalists. We’re sure they’re all saying “I told you so!”

The well-known university has already appointed an acting President.
