“TODAY” show co-anchor Hoda Kotb has been hosting her “TODAY” show hour by herself at the 30 Rockefeller Studio while her co-anchor Savannah Gutherie is self-isolating, hosting from home.

Today, Hoda interviewed New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees (via video conference call) to talk about the $5 million donation he made to Louisiana to help during the Coronavirus crisis. The NFLer and his wife, Brittany, announced they were donating the money because “the priority now is helping our communities get through this tough time."

Brittany and I are committing $5,000,000 to the State of Louisiana in 2020. The priority now is helping our communities get through this tough time. After considerable research and conversations with local organizations, we will be mobilizing our partnerships with Second Harvest Food Bank, Ochsner Health Systems, Walk-Ons, Jimmy Johns, Smalls Sliders and Waitr to prepare and deliver over 10,000 meals per day throughout Louisiana for as long as it takes to children on meal programs, seniors, and families in need. Let’s all do our part, maintain hope, and get through this together.

Sadly, New Orleans is quickly on track to becoming a Coronavirus epicenter. The city's tradition of large social gatherings combined with higher than average rates of obesity and chronic disease - people in New Orleans are at risk. It's also important to note that the state's leadership has, for years, often put healthcare as a non priority.  This affects the quantity and wuality of healthcare professionals, health education and hospitals.

By the time the city put a ban on large crowds, weeks after Mardi Gras 2020, it was likely too late. Today, the state has 2,305 reported cases of COVID-19 and 83 reported deaths, according to the Louisiana Department of Health. The death toll is one of the highest in the country.

Hoda was a strong connection to Louisiana, having worked there for years as an anchor for WWL-TV in New Orleans.

“I actually think a lot of things are contagious, including generosity," Hoda told Drew as she wrapped up their interview. "Our hope is that because you let us know you made this big generous donation, other people can look and say, ‘Hey, maybe I can help out too.’ Drew, we love you.”

“Love you too, Hoda,” Drew responded.
