‘Felix Ever After’: Amazon Is Turning Kacen Callender’s Book About A Black Trans Teen Into A TV Series

Award-winning author Kacen Callender’s young adult book about a black trans teen struggling with self-identity and love is being transformed into a TV series thanks to Amazon Studios. Deets inside…

Award-winning author Kacen Callender is currently living it up on cloud 9.

In May, Kacen released their young adult novel, “Felix Ever After,“ via Harper Collins and it has been making a splash in the literary world. So much so, Amazon Studios didn’t waste any time to snatch up the rights to the book for a TV adaptation with Field Trip Productions. The production company has a first-book deal with Amazon Studios.

”Felix Ever After” follows a “transgender teen grappling with identity and self-discovery while falling in love for the first time.”

Felix Love has never been in love and wants to experience it, but the teen can’t quite understand why he hasn’t found it yet. The teen is also grappling with self-identity as if being a teenager isn’t already hard enough.

”He desperately wants to know what it’s like and why it seems so easy for everyone but him to find someone. What’s worse is that, even though he is proud of his identity, Felix also secretly fears that he’s one marginalization too many—Black, queer, and transgender—to ever get his own happily-ever-after. When an anonymous student begins sending him transphobic messages—after publicly posting Felix’s deadname alongside images of him before he transitioned—Felix comes up with a plan for revenge. What he didn’t count on: his catfish scenario landing him in a quasi–love triangle. But as he navigates his complicated feelings, Felix begins a journey of questioning and self-discovery that helps redefine his most important relationship: how he feels about himself.”

The 31-year-old author - whose pronouns are they/them - is originally from Saint Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. Kacen has a BA from Sarah Lawrence College and an MFA from the New School’s writing for children program. They are also the author of the young adult novel This Is Kind of an Epic Love Story and the middle grade novel Hurricane Child, winner of the Stonewall Book Award and Lambda Literary Award.

The series is def necessary. It'll shed light on what it's like being black, queer and trans in our society. And we wouldn't be surprised if it helps bridge a gap for transphobic people between their personal views and accepting healthy love, no matter what the form.
