Video Shows Woman Struggling To Break Loose From Security Moments Before Jumping Off 10th Floor Of Cruise Ship

There’s new video of a women moments before she reportedly jumped off the 10th floor of the Carnival Valor cruise ship into the ocean.

The tragic incident reportedly happened around 2:28 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 16th after the ship left from Cozumel, Mexico the day before.

In the new viral clip, you see a distraught woman trying to break from being subdued by security officers as they pulled her arms behind her. She starts screaming “Alicia” as security officers struggle to calm her down. It’s reported the woman - who was traveling with her husband - was detained for allegedly getting into a fight with a man in the hot tub.

The video then cuts to shocked passengers looking overboard into the water as crews rushed to the edge of the ship to throw in a life preserver.

The 32-year-old woman (who remains unidentified) was able to get out of their grip and - without warning - jumped from the 10th floor balcony (of the 11-floor cruise ship) into the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 150 miles offshore SouthWest Pass, Louisiana.

Despite some accounts that said the woman was handcuffed, it was confirmed by a Carnival Cruise Line spokes perform that she was not in handcuffs. Security guards were escorting her back to her cabin before she jumped.

One passenger said they saw the woman hit her head on the side of the vessel before going face-first into the water.

“There are some lifeboats there that apparently she hit on the way down. Which when it hit, it was pretty loud, and of course, there was a disturbance here on the ship, which made me go on my balcony on deck 7,” said Kim Barnette, one of the ship’s passengers and a resident of Baton Rouge.

The cruise ship circled for hours before the Coast Guard took over the rescue efforts. The Coast Guard has suspended the search.

“The decision to suspend a search-and-rescue case is never one we come to lightly,” said Chief Warrant Officer Tricia Eldredge, Command Duty Officer at Sector New Orleans. “We offer our deepest sympathies to the family during this difficult time.”

The cruise ship returned to dock in New Orleans on Thursday (Feb. 17th).

“The feeling onboard the ship right now is a little subdued. Of course, most people are at dinner or in their cabins. There’s not a lot of activity that you see going on board, that you see with people. Because everybody is praying for the family because it’s a pretty bad situation,” said Barnette.

Another passenger was going to jump in to try and save her, but cruise ship staff stopped her. Watch some of the witness' accounts of what happened below: 

Carnival released a statement:

Carnival Valor supported the search for a guest who jumped overboard from her balcony on Wednesday evening while the ship was at sea. The ship’s command immediately began search and rescue procedures, returned to the area near where the incident occurred and notified the U.S. Coast Guard. Carnival’s CARE team is providing support to the guest’s husband who was traveling with her, as well as her family.

Lord. What a tragedy. We’re sending prayers to the woman’s family. We can’t even imagine.
