It’s finally over. Dr. Dre’s divorce from his ex-wife Nicole Young has been finalized and now he has to pay her a whopping $100 million in the divorce settlement, making the list as one of the largest divorce settlements to date. More inside…
The long and messy divorce between Dr. Dre and Nicole Young has come to an end with Nicole securing a MAJOR bag.
The Hip Hop mogul (real name Andre Romelle Young) and his wife of 24-years reached an agreement in their divorce settlement, which resulted in Nicole cashing out $100 million! The Beats by Dre honcho is expected to pay her $50 million now and then another $50 million a year from now, according to Rolling Stone.
Also, Nicole is required to move out of their Malibu beach house by the end of the month, but she reportedly gets to keep a Rolls Royce, Range Rover, Escalade limousine, and Spyder motorcycle, as well as all of her jewelry, cash and bank accounts that she had maintained during the marriage.
Dre gets to 7 of the properties they own, including a Malibu home, 2 homes in Calabasas, and 4 properties in the L.A. area, including the $100 million Brentwood estate, according to TMZ. He gets to keep full rights to his master recordings, trademarks and interests in various partnerships and trusts. He also keeps all of their Apple stocks, which includes the proceeds from the sale of Beats by Dre. He’ll also keep six of their cars while Nicole keeps the other 4. The couple also had storages filled with belongings, in which Nicole will be able to keep all the stuff inside that was hers.
If you didn’t know, Nicole was gunning to have the Death Row Records co-founder pay for her legal fees, but the judge ruled she’ll have to pay her own, which reportedly totals millions of dollars.
TMZ reported Dre’s net worth is $820 million, despite being dubbed Hip Hop’s first billionaire. However, Rolling Stone obtained divorce papers filed with L.A. Superior Court on Nov. 18th that state his net worth is at $458.2 million, with $182.7 million of that sum in cash, $6.3 million in stocks, and $269.2 million in property and assets, including intellectual property. It's unclear what accounts for the discrepancy, but you can take a wild guess.
Dre was believed to be worth considerably more after Apple bought his Beats Electronics in 2014 for $3 billion; his stake was reportedly worth $800 million at the time. It is unclear what accounts for the discrepancy.
Rolling Stone reports:
Legal observers say the turning point in the case came earlier this year, when Spector successfully pushed for the removal of Laura Wasser, another superstar divorce attorney, from Dre’s team. Spector and Wasser have squared off in the past, most notably in the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard divorce (Wasser represented Depp, while Spector was on Heard’s team). Likewise, Howard King, who had repped the couple on previous legal matters, was barred from representing Dre in the divorce. As a result, Anne Kiley, whose clients include Brad Pitt, took over as the point on Dre’s legal team.
With Wasser and King out, Nicole added more firepower to her legal team, bringing in attorneys Lisa Helfend Meyer and Bryan Freedman to untangle intellectual property issues given the record producer’s vast library of music created during the couple’s union. According to Tuesday’s settlement, Wasser and King each agreed to pay Nicole $50,000 to put to bed any potential claims between them. Both Dre and Nicole have agreed not to appeal the agreement.
Over the last 18 months, the 56-year-old Hip Hop mogul and his 51-year-old ex-wife (who share two adult children, Truice & Truly) have been fighting it out in divorce court since she filed for divorce in June 2020. When Nicole filed, Dr. Dre tried to stop Nicole’s bag when he tried to enforce a prenuptial agreement that they allegedly signed in 1996. Nicole’s lawyer argued that Nicole signed the prenup under “duress.”
Also, Nicole made claims that Dr. Dre kicked her out of their home in early April. Not only that, she accused him of domestic violence, including two incidents where he allegedly held a gun to her head...twice. She also accused him of "rampant, repeated marital misconduct." He denied all of her abuse allegations.
Before the massive settlement, Dre was ordered to pay Nicole $293,306 per month in spousal support, payable on the first of each month, which began August 1st. When you do the math, that totals to over $3.5 million a year - not including other expenses.
Well, she’ll no longer receive the spousal support payments as the settlement shut that down.
$100 milli is a lot of cash. You may recall, NBA icon Michael Jordan had to cough up $168 million to Juanita Vanoy following their divorce. While the biggest Hollywood divorce totaled out to possibly $73 billion (Bill and Melinda Gates), Dre is still pretty high on the list of the most expensive celebrity divorces ever.
